Creating Usable Outdoor Spaces Through Innovation

In the steep terrain of Mill Valley’s Homestead Valley neighborhood, Heritage Landscapes turned a challenging hillside site into a family-friendly outdoor retreat. Collaborating with Shades of Green, the team designed a modern landscape that harmonized with the home's sleek architecture. The project involved significant excavation and engineered retaining walls to stabilize the site. Key features include a custom pool with board-formed concrete walls, a heated pergola, an outdoor kitchen, artificial turf play areas, and raised vegetable beds. Despite the site’s complexities, the completed design provides a functional, stylish space where the family can relax, play, and grow together.

Integrating the New with the Old

Nestled in the scenic Kent Woodlands neighborhood, this project challenged Heritage Landscapes to blend a modern outdoor retreat with a decades-old landscape. During construction, the team uncovered a buried, obsolete pool that had to be excavated and removed before regrading the site for a new luxury pool and patio. Collaborating with Integrated Design Studio, Heritage Landscapes designed a space that harmonized with the existing features, incorporating a custom-built pool with bluestone coping, a pergola, an outdoor kitchen, and a gas fireplace for cozy gatherings. Enhanced privacy was achieved with new wood fencing, creating a tranquil outdoor oasis that seamlessly integrates old and new while showcasing stunning views of Mt. Tamalpais.

Merging Two Properties into One Scenic Retreat

At Stinson Beach, Heritage Landscapes transformed two adjacent lots in the exclusive Seadrift neighborhood into a unified luxury retreat. The project balanced the creation of a seamless above-ground design with the need to maintain distinct irrigation systems and infrastructure for each lot. Mature olive trees, edible plants, and artificial turf were incorporated, ensuring resilience in the challenging coastal environment. The centerpiece—a luxurious pool—was complemented by gravel driveways, wind protection measures, and imported organic soil to support the lush landscaping. The result is a serene coastal haven with panoramic views of Mt. Tamalpais and the Pacific Ocean, offering an idyllic escape for relaxation and entertaining.
