Located in the picturesque Kent Woodlands neighborhood, this project presented Heritage Landscapes with an exciting challenge: integrating a new, luxurious outdoor space with an existing landscape that had seen decades of use. The property’s full-sun backyard, nestled within towering redwoods and offering breathtaking views of Mt. Tamalpais, provided the perfect backdrop for the project. However, as the team began construction, they uncovered an old pool buried beneath the site, which would need to be removed before any new development could proceed.

Working alongside the homeowner and Integrated Design Studio, Heritage Landscapes developed a plan that would allow the new pool and patio areas to blend seamlessly with the existing landscape. The old pool was carefully excavated and removed, and the site was regraded with imported gravel to create a level surface for the new pool and outdoor living spaces.

The final design included a custom-built pool, bordered by elegant bluestone coping and pool decks that seamlessly connected with the existing patios. A pergola and outdoor kitchen were added to provide ample space for outdoor dining and entertaining, while a gas fireplace served as the focal point for the lounge area. New wood fencing and gates were also installed to ensure privacy, rounding out the transformation of this luxurious outdoor retreat.

Despite the discovery of the old pool and the challenges it presented, Heritage Landscapes delivered a beautifully integrated outdoor space that met the homeowners’ desire for a place to relax, entertain, and enjoy the stunning views of Mt. Tamalpais.

The second case study takes us to Stinson Beach, where Heritage Landscapes was tasked with transforming two double lots into a seamless luxury retreat. Located in the exclusive Seadrift neighborhood, this property offers unparalleled views of  Mt. Tamalpais to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west, creating a liminal space where land meets sea, and relaxation is paramount.

Working with Schalich Brothers Construction, Element Outdoor Construction, and Steve Wisenbaker AIA Architects, Heritage Landscapes helped bring the homeowners' vision to life. The goal was to merge the two lots into one cohesive landscape while ensuring each property maintained its own distinct irrigation system and underground infrastructure. Above ground, however, the space needed to appear as one continuous luxury retreat, with the pool serving as the centerpiece.

The team collaborated closely with landscape designer Erin Werner to select plants suited to the challenging coastal environment. Mature olive trees and edible landscaping were incorporated into the design, while Heritage Landscapes focused on preparing the soil, installing artificial turf, planting, irrigation, and drainage systems, as well as constructing gravel driveways.

One of the most significant challenges was dealing with the sandy soil and salt-laden coastal air. To ensure the plants would thrive, the team imported large quantities of organic soil and constructed a windscreen to protect the landscape from the elements. The result is a stunning, private retreat that feels both luxurious and at one with its coastal environment, providing the homeowners with a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life.

In Mill Valley’s Homestead Valley neighborhood, Heritage Landscapes was brought in to redevelop a steep, challenging site and transform it into a functional, family-friendly outdoor living space. The homeowners had recently modernized the architecture of their speculative home and wanted to create more usable space for their family to enjoy the sunny, chaparral-covered landscape.

Heritage Landscapes was tasked with designing and constructing a new pool and surrounding outdoor areas, but the project presented several challenges from the start. The backyard was situated on a steep hillside, making access difficult and requiring significant excavation before any work could begin. Additionally, the site needed engineered retaining walls to ensure the structural integrity of both the pool and the surrounding landscape.

The team connected the client with Shades of Green, a local design firm, to integrate the new landscape with the home's modern architectural style. A clean, modern plant palette was selected to complement the house’s sleek lines, while corten steel edging, custom concrete walls, and gravel paving were used to define the outdoor spaces.

The finished project includes a custom pool with board-formed concrete walls, a heated pergola for outdoor dining, an outdoor kitchen, artificial turf for low-maintenance play areas, and raised vegetable beds for the homeowners to grow their own food. Despite the challenging topography and tight access to the site, Heritage Landscapes was able to deliver a beautifully functional outdoor space that meets the family’s needs and enhances the property’s value.
